He wrote one of the biggest selling diet books of all time, and it was based on his extraordinary belief that you could eat as much as you desire and still lose weight. His name was Dr Robert Atkins, author of the Atkins new diet revolution. To some Dr Atkins was a hero, to others his diet was scientific heresy and potentially deadly. In a series of ground breaking experiments Horizon investigates the truth behind the most controversial diet in history. Does the Atkins diet really work and is it dangerous?

    know what else is weird about the Atkins diet? you almost NEVER shit! I did it for well over a year many years ago and lost around 70 lbs. Barely ever had a bowel movement either. how does that work? lol

    why are people so retarded. Essential fatty acids and appropriate fats should be the source of fats, not just anything. Some ratio between protein and fat should be established. But that might actually take a little work and dedication.

    @bundleHastings Carrots and corn are high in carbs. The vegetables in Atkins dietare LOW CARB, hence the whole point of the diet.

    Science was the one who said that the human body burns calories, Atkins never came up with that theory.

    It’s has always baffled me to hear “burn calories”, I think science might be wrong about burning calories in the first place, but it’s sort of like the atom theory, where many are debating particles versus string theory.

    In my opinion I think that calories is more of a chemical reaction, like a battery: Energy, heat, and toxic (eliminated through the excretory system) are the result.

    You are very, very wrong when you say he advocated: “tons of vegetables”. Veggies are VERY limited, especially things like tomatoes, carrots, swede, parsnip, sweetcorn and so on…

    Also you say lean protein, when Dr A stated his diet is a 70% fat diet, and LOTS of fats and oils are to be eaten.

    The production of this is just mental. Not an advocate of the Atkins diet by any means, but this is bordering on the comical…

    @hellangelassia Five days? You have up waaay too soon. Most of us feel that way for the first 3 weeks. After that, you’d have more energy than you know what to do with!

    this show is stupid. Dr. Atkins never said he was against physical fundamentals of the universe. That energy could never be created or destroy.

    Low calorie induces ketosis which promotes your body to burn fat.

    You don’t need to eat fatty excessive fats and proteins. You can eat lean protein and eat tons of vegetables. You eat fruit too but limit it.

    People are just too nuts about this anti Atkins.

    Where are the veggies??? Atkins is a much more balanced diet then what is being shown here. People who follow it quickly, lose their hunger and also lose weight.

    I tried this diet once! Its mad… you reallty do loose weight but after 5 days the craving for fruit was so great i gave up. I felt sluggish and half dead during the diet… now i will only take the long but safe way.
