Can Anyone Help My Fat Dog?
Question by Ezzira: Can Anyone Help My Fat Dog?
So as the question implies, does anyone have any advice for healthy dog weight loss? If you have website or book sources or you’re a vet or an animal geek, I’m listening.
I guess I should talk about Wilson. He’s a four-going-on-five-year-old miniature poodle who is ten pounds overweight. He has labored breathing and he’s noticeably thick.
My dad always gives him so much crap. Doggie treats and table food alike. My mom and sisters and I have tried to tell him to stop, but he’s the “man” and “his women” won’t order him around. Is there an alternative snack I could buy instead?
Also, Wilson hates exercise. Is there a work-out plan for fat doggies that don’t play?
Sorry this was so long, but I appreciate you reading it all the way through!

That’s pretty simple.
Cut out the table scraps and treats. Lower the amount of kibble…if necessary.
As for the work out plan…attach leash to collar and take him for a walk.

Three main factors in exercise and weight loss for women
A exercise and weight loss plan for women who are looking to lose weight or even maintain their figure should focus on a few things. It doesn’t take much keep that high school figure or even get it back. It really shouldn’t be work it should be enjoyable. Enjoyability in who you are and getting there is very important.
First thing you should be doing is having a good diet plan that is rich in healthy foods such as fruit and vegetables. You should be aiming to have a fruit and vegetable with every meal. And making sure you have a good protein source along with a complex carbohydrate. Apple pie does not count as fruit and supreme pizza doesn’t count as your vegetables either. So just remember ask yourself is this food going to benefit me in the form of nutrition or is it going to make me fat and feel unhealthy.
Second thing is exercise when making a exercise and weight loss plan for women you should keep a strong activity plan, something realistic that you can keep up with in these busy times. If you know you cannot exercise after work because you have a family or you will be to tired then you will have to do it before work or at lunch. You have to work around all the things that will get in the way. When women lose weight they expect to lose weight very quickly cause they ate good or better for a week. It doesn’t work that way.
Third thing with a exercise and weight loss plan for women is keeping your goals realistic and understanding that you will not lose a lot of weight very quickly. Some women will lose it faster than others and some slower. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t lose weight the first week or two, keep pushing through remembering that this changes is for life not just till you get your goal weight. If you think that way you will gain it all back. Make a lifestyle change. Well, your father is shortening your dogs life by at least 10 years.
You need to start feeding your dog on a schedule. Twice a day is good. Measure the food using a measuring cup, feed 1/4 cup less than you usually do. Substitute the missing 1/4 cup of food with either canned pumpkin or string beans (by the frozen in a bag). You can defrost them and put them in the food.
Start slowly exercising him. Let him take his time. Start like you would a human…walk him a 1/2 block, then a whole block, then 2 blocks etc. Exercise will kick start his metabolism. He doesn’t want to exercise because he’s overweight and it’s extra pressure on his joints and back, which probably hurt him.
For treats, he should get carrots. Cut some carrots up and give them to him. No more doggie cookies, no more table scraps, no more. It’s time to do the right thing.
Well getting a dog food especially made for overweight dogs will help cut down the calories and stop feeding all the table scraps and treats. If your father won’t stop feeding him from the table then put the dog in another room while you eat, or in a kennel until you are finished eating so he doesn’t get any “extra” food. Your father needs to understand that he is gradually killing his own dog by feeding him all that junk food. Dogs are not meant to have people food. How sad he can’t see what he is doing to his pet.
Two walks a day to start will help him lose weight. You need to get him into a routine of walking. Maybe once in the morning and once at night. Work up to 45 minutes. Start out small until he gets use to it since he hasn’t had any exercise in a while. If he is used to walking double his walk time that you currently take him on to start and then gradually add more time to the walk. Maybe take him to a dog park where he can run and play with other dogs to work off some extra calories. the food is the big thing to stop feeding him.
well im no expert or anything but i keep my dog really fit and heathy. i feed him some dog food and some vegies that i make and eat also walk your dogs twice a day like i do but if you dog is really fat about three times a day. also if you dont want to walk your dog like if theres bad weather. im being SERIOUS i put my dog on a leash and tie it to the tredmill and he walks on it for 2o minutes.also keep your dog active in your yard play with him/her often. all these things i do and i keep my dog really fit and my dog has lost alot of weight. i really hope this help because my dog was really unheathy with his weight problems and i really buckled down and made him work hard and loose weight. if this doesnt help im sorry
veggies.. carrot sticks, cucumbers, green beans.. low fat treats
there are also “pup corn” treats which are low-fat
Put a leash on the dog and walk him. He may not like it because its probably difficult if he’s that over weight.. but start out slow and build up his endurance to it.
Also cut back on the kibbles.. find a reduced calorie/reduced fat formula.
Check with your vet and make sure the dog doesn’t have anything wrong with him that would make a diet and exercise program risky. Ask how much the dog should weigh.
Throw out all the kibble and all the dog treats.
Buy a whole chicken in the meat department of your grocery store.
Figure out what 2% of your dog’s idea weight is. If he should weigh 12 pounds, then 2% is 4oz. Measure out a chunk of raw chicken that weighs 4oz. Give it to the dog. Remember, the bones count, because they are mostly edible, even for a little cutie like a miniature poodle.
If he doesn’t finish the 4oz chunk, leave it in his dish. That is his daily ration; he can eat it as he pleases or not, but he gets nothing else until he finishes that.

Apparently your father wants to kill the dog so keep him away and portal him back to the Stone Age.
You can ask your vet for a prescription Calorie Control diet food like Royal Canin. If that’s not an option, feed a high quality food (nothing from the grocery store) like EVO or even Blue Buffalo weight control. Eliminate all snacks until you see improvement. None of this will help without exercise. You need to walk that dog at least once a day for about 20 – 30 minutes. You can start out with 10 minutes but keep the dog moving. A backyard is no substitute for the bonding and exercise of a walk. Excessive weight on a animal adds stress to the joints. Is you father prepared for those medical costs???
There’s an old saying that if your dog is overweight, it means YOU are not getting enough exercise.
As with weight issues with humans, it has everything to do with the balance of calories going in versus calories used up. Your dog is still young and still has a chance to dodge the serious health issues that come with being overweight. Again as with humans, it’s preferable to have a well-balanced diet of quality food in smaller portions, rather than a lot of crap food.
Read the labels of anything you feed your dog. The top of the list should always be meat. Trust the premium brands. Avoid foods with excessive grains such as wheat or corn. Snacks that are good for dogs are carrots, broccoli, celery and apple (not the core though). Snacks that are bad are the very rich ones with a lot of chemical additives or sugar or wheat. Don’t feed your dog milk products or human foods.
As for exercise, start your dog off slowly and short walks. Not only does this poor little guy have the problem of being small (so one step for you might be several for him), but he’s also carrying an extra load of weight. In my experience, no dog dislikes a walk. He gets to sniff new things and stimulate his senses. Just putting him in a backyard is not enough. He needs this time to bond with his human(s).
As for your dad and his attitude… no disrespect but he sounds like a real piece of work. He isn’t likely to come around to seeing what problems he’s causing. What I’d do is quietly get him out of the loop. Get the dog away from the dinner table, tell your dad you’ll give the dog the leftovers but then pitch them out or put them someplace else and keep the dog on the healthy diet and healthy lifestyle. You’ll feel better for it and so will your dog. Regular vet visits are a must too.
Thanks for coming for advice and if you still have questions, please ask. There are a lot of friendly and knowledgable dog people here who are very helpful. Good luck and have fun!
The first thing I’d suggest is to cut out the treats and table food. It sounds harsh, but it will really help. Then I’d look at introducing vegetables into your dogs diet. You can also buy weight reduction diets for your pooch. Check our your local pet supply store to see what they have.
In regards to exercise for your dog….it’s always difficult to drop the weight on a dog that doesn’t like to play. What I’d suggest is walking or swimming. Even a dog that doesn’t like to play can walk. If you have a pool at home then get in with your dog and make your dog swim to you. If your dog isn’t good at swimming then support your dog gently in the water while it paddles.
It’s important to remember, particularly because your dog already has laboured breathing, that any exercise regime should be started slowly. Start with 5 or 10 minutes once or twice a day and as your dogs health improves the duration of the exercise can be increased.
I’d also consult with and work closely with your vet. Have regular check ups, including weigh in’s. Your vet can follow the progress of your dog, listen to his chest, keep track of the observations you make while you’re exercising with him and advise you of any additional or different measures you might be able to take.
I hope this is helpful. Good luck!
