Well obviously as the guy before said run. But the specifics of running would be to try some HIT intervals. That is , High Intensity Training Intervals. This is the best way to quickly increase both your stamina and leg muscles.
What you should do is for 15mins.. start of sprinting as fast as you can for 2mins non-stop. Then walk for 3 to catch your breathe. Then repeat 3 times. Make sure to really push yourself. You’ll burn more calories than running for 40mins, and also build muscle since its High Intensity. Do that 3 days a week, and rest on the off days (or jog some, never hurts).
Combining that level of strength with HUGE aerobic fitness is very difficult – I bet very few of the big lifting bodybuilders or powerlifters you see on thursday afternoon could do it.
i agree entirely that lifting weights can be far more conducive to sustained weight loss than cardio…but – when it comes to our long term health – aerobic fitness is just so important, and in my opinion /should/ be a part of every exercise program. i guess the trick is to not let it get too stressful – just raise your heart rate sufficiently to give your heart a workout. that's why it's called cardio, after all!(disclaimer – i am a runner, addicted to running… so perhaps i am biased? i personally find it crucial to my mental health, to get in a couple of runs every week)
