What should you know about the BARF diet for dogs before you begin using it?
I’ve been thinking about switching Judge to the BARF diet after he’s through with his bag of dog food. Is it cheaper than buying Innova? How much time does it take to make raw food? How do you switch a dog off dry food and into raw? Any other info is helpful. Thanks a lot!

also look into supplements, some people on here i read say raw meat doesn’t need supplements, but i don’t know why. i would supplement with vitamins and minerals and enzymes.
at a holistic pet store, to buy the supplemented frozen meat there, it would cost $10 a day to feed my 2 puppies (35lbs and 20lbs)..it is on the high end for price for pet stores though.
the thing is, innova is better than buying some cheap meat at a grocery store, imo..because it’s all about the source.
so if i were going to do raw food diet, i’d only buy from a holistic store or butcher i trusted probably..

Don’t do it! This is not a diet based on science. Iknow it sounds like it makes sense but there is ALOT you don’t know. I was the same till I researched it. All of these people that push this diet don’t show facts to back up their claims. Why??? Because fact is this diet will probably be worse than what you feed now. Go to the site I listed below please!! Do ALOT of research look for FACTS not claims, if you do You will change your mind. Find a high quality food. Orijen, Canidae, timberwolf organics, innova etc.. It takes some reserach to feed the correct ratio of meat/organs/bones and to feed the correct amount of food per your dog’s body weight. Here are some helpful links for researching raw & BARF:

I feed my dog partial raw and partial kibble (in separate meals, as I’ve heard they digest at different rates and the raw bacteria feeds on grain in kibbles and can cause problems).
I started off feeding 1/4 of the recommending feeding for raw medallions for her first meal, than 3/4 of the recommending feeding in her second meal. Then went to half and half after about a week or so. But some people do it cold-turkey (be prepared for runny stools for a few days though if you do the cold-turkey switch).

Also go to BARF diets, there’s a wealth of info. on the internet. I’ve been raw feeding for over 5 years, do buy human grade meat and organs from the supermarket when it’s on sale, my raw meaty bones from the ethnic markets and use Oma’s premixes. I can get my two dogs meals together in less than 5 minutes. My 4 month old puppy switched from kibble to raw (kibble one day, raw the next) without any problem, loved it, the 9 month old picky eater it took about 2 weeks and I used a digestive enzyme. Do your research before you commit to switching, it’s not for everyone especially if you aren’t prepared initially to read everything you can about raw feeding. There’s nothing hard about it, but you do have to have a basic knowledge of your dog’s nutritional needs. Good luck.
It’s not a cheat, it’s a ticking time bomb. The fat from the food makes a layer inside your stomach, partially blocking access of alcohol into your system. I have a friend who used to abuse this in our college times, he consumed quite a lot of raw food oil before drinking, resulting in him being sober (or just slightly tipsy) no matter how much he drank, but once the “fat” layer inside was penetrated, he just pass out instantly. Quite a disturbing view.
I am definitely skeptical of the BARF diet for dogs and cats, as it's claims are totally unsubstantiated and raw food carries significant risk. You're cooking this food, yes?
